My Gear

First, a quick disclaimer regarding gear acquisition. Each creator, as they delve into their art with greater and greater ferver, begins to appreciate what gear would allow them to be more effective. The gear I suggest below is the stuff I would take to war, and I do truly love it. However, I am able to justify these purchases for a couple of reasons. First, I’ve developed a clear understanding of what pieces of gear will allow me to get more keeper photos, and I’ve validated each piece of gear through extensive use. Second, I’m bad with money.

The truth is that it took five years to get to this point with my gear, and some of that time I was working a corporate job that allowed me some financial liberties. I began with a camera in the $300 range and a single lens in the $50 range. By two years later my gear had changed and was worth about twice as much, but I only invested slightly more to get to that point by selling my old gear at the right time for the right amount. I’ve stuck with this practice for years, allowing myself to upgrade each time I feel ready without having to splash enormous amounts of cash.

If I were to sit down with a close friend who is getting into photography, the gear I use is not necessarily the gear I would suggest. That is unless money is of no concern. If money is no concern, I genuinely believe this gear is worth it’s cost and then some. In fact, each piece of gear is, relative to the industry standard, well positioned in terms of price, size, and quality. I will also work on including a section for first time buyers or beginner photographers to refer to, because there is some amazing stuff that doesn’t cost as much as a liver.

Disclaimer: Each photo of the gear below is clickable and will take you to an affiliated website such as Adorama or Amazon. If you choose to purchase an item using these links, you will pay exactly the same amount as you otherwise would, but I will receive a small commission percentage. Any link that takes you to an Amazon item automatically sends me a small commission payout even if you purchase something entirely different from the item shown. Using these links is a great way to help me earn a little money and feed my pup, Sherpa :D

The Adventure Photography Kit:

This is my do or die, not going to miss the shot, kit. It weighs a fair deal, though, and if push comes to shove, I know I can successfully capture a full visual series using just the Nikon Z8 and the Nikkor Z 24-120mm f/4 S lens (this is my favorite lens ever). While I do typically bring this full kit for travel and backpacking, I will often use a trimmed down version for mountaineering. Two examples include: The Nikon Z8 with the Nikkor 24-120mm f/4 S, or the Nikon Z8 with the Nikkor Z 17-28mm f/2.8 & the Nikkor Z 70-180 f/2.8.

For the Film Folks:

The last year I finally did what it seems everyone is doing; I bought a film camera (to share with my wife). I happily made fun of the film folks up until getting this thing, and now it joins me for nearly every trip. I’d bring this up a mountain with some Portra rather than bringing the food I probably need (this is a joke). Photography has become so intensely clinical with our editing softwares, the means we share it, and the robotic cameras we use. Film is refreshing, it’s fun, it’s definitely too expensive, and it’s absolutely worth trying.

Video Equipment:

I must preface by saying that video is a VERY new concept to me, and I have limited experience. While I have dabbled in wildlife videography, as well as time lapse work, I am no expert. Still, this is my primary setup right now (with one addition that will be joining me very soon now that I’ve begun Youtube).
